I’ll be honest in that I’m pretty sick of the anonymous messaging secret reveal as a story structure, especially when set at a classically preppy school. Can you say dark academia? Bonus points for a stunning cover and LGBT rep. “Incendiary” is an excellent word for this book. With heart-pounding suspense and relevant social commentary comes a high-octane thriller from debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé. Can Devon and Chiamaka stop Aces before things become incredibly deadly? Shortly after the announcement is made, though, someone who goes by Aces begins using anonymous text messages to reveal secrets about the two of them that turn their lives upside down and threaten every aspect of their carefully planned futures.Īs Aces shows no sign of stopping, what seemed like a sick prank quickly turns into a dangerous game, with all the cards stacked against them. After all, not only does it look great on college applications, but it officially puts each of them in the running for valedictorian, too. When two Niveus Private Academy students, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, are selected to be part of the elite school’s senior class prefects, it looks like their year is off to an amazing start. Gossip Girl meets Get Out in Ace of Spades, a YA contemporary thriller by debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé about two students, Devon & Chiamaka, and their struggles against an anonymous bully. 7/8/2023 0 Comments Cabin end of the worldAs Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: “Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault”. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road. Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. I wondered: Is this “end of the world” business literal? After reading the summary I realized it might be, and given that I have a weird kind of fascination with that sort of thing, I decided to go for it. Why I Chose It: The cover caught my eye at work-that and the title. Okay, so he probably told them that last part. That it would utilize the scary, blood-hungry kind of vampires (or "virals," to use his terminology) who don't sparkle or write any poetry, and it would be told in the form of letters, newspaper clippings, maps, extracts of future-y commission reports, dreams, telepathic communication, massive flashbacks and just good, old-fashioned boot-in-the-teeth storytelling. Involve dozens and dozens of interlinked characters who find each other, marry, age, have children, live and die and go crazy and become president. Things like how, by the time it was done, the series would stretch to something like 1,500 pages. So much more than that simple nerd-bait elevator pitch ever revealed. The things that make this trilogy different. And then waited for the publishers to line up and throw money at him.īut then there are the things he probably didn't tell them. It's a post-apocalyptic sci-fi western with vampires is all he would've had to say. When Justin Cronin pitched his Passage trilogy - which began with The Passage in 2010, continued with The Twelve in 2012 and is now finishing with The City Of Mirrors - it must have been one of the easiest buys in the history of publishing. Close overlay Buy Featured Book Title The City of Mirrors Author Justin Cronin In The Town House, Norah Lofts evokes fourteenth- and fifteenth-century life from the perspective of five different characters. The vast scope of The Suffolk Trilogy - continued with The House at Old Vine and The House at Sunset - involves the reader in a fascinating journey through time. In its very foundations it held secrets and lies, passionate love and deep despair. Built in the late fourteenth century by Martin Reed, a runaway serf who had defied his master for the woman he loved, the house was to change and grow for six centuries. Can a house built from the ashes of tragedy ever be a place of lasting happiness? Can the hereditary mix of wild gypsy lore, fierce independence, magic and mystery truly settle in a respectable home? The Town House is the first in Norah Lofts' enduringly popular Suffolk Trilogy about the Old Vine at Baildon. As a kid, I used to laugh at the funny things Calvin used to do. Calvin and Hobbes is great because it is funny on so many levels. The content is exactly as stated (the first two books combined I believe) and the colors were great. Having always been a fan of Calvin and Hobbes, I jumped at the chance to get it on Kindle. Printing-wise, 2 out of 5 - what were they thinking when they put out this cheap, flimsy edition? Disappointed, but I guess it's worth exactly the $10 I paid for the paperback copy. So, content-wise, 5 out of 5 stars for being yet another great Calvin & Hobbes collection. I haven't tested the quality of the binding yet, but it doesn't have the same heft as the originals. The colors on the color comics are "off" - especially side-by-side with the original books from the 90's and early 2000's, you can see that something is wrong. So when I finally decided to buy it this month, I was really looking forward to completing the collection! Yes, it's the same book with the same delightfully terrifying opening, but the printing quality isn't there at all. This was the one book my father and I were missing out of our Calvin & Hobbes collection - and it's the one book that racked up a hefty library fine for the eight year-old me when it disappeared onto my bookshelf and I forgot that it wasn't mine. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Novel the necklaceFrom the very beginning of the story, the reader is introduced to Mathilde’s inner thoughts and desires. According to Yadav (2019), “social morality was lost, the splendid life of the upper class and the moral concept of profit-seeking, influenced the various social classes, the vain and the pursuit of pleasure, and became the prevailing social atmosphere at that time” (p. Mathilde is the product of a capitalist society that only values the tangible fortunes and disregards the immoralities behind them. This mindset is reflected through the story’s protagonist, Mathilde Loisel, whose dream is a luxurious life that her working-class husband cannot provide for her. Maupassant’s The Necklace was written and published in 1884, a time when society was corrupt and chasing the materialistic pleasures of the upper-class life due to the Industrial Revolution. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Eva ashwood kings of chaosComparison to Den of VipersĪs I read the first book, I couldn’t help but compare the two stories together as each of the guys fits a specific role that lines up with the guys in Den of Vipers.
